Srinagar, Jan 02 (KNO): The much-anticipated Winter Carnival at Pahalgam, organised by the Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir, commenced at the Pahalgam Club on Thursday at 4 pm. The event aims to bolster winter tourism at this renowned destination. The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, CM's Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and several other prominent officials and dignitaries. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), officials expressed optimism about the region's tourism prospects. “While Pahalgam saw a good flow of tourists in 2024, it was slightly below the levels recorded in 2023. However, overall business remained strong, and stakeholders achieved satisfactory returns,” an official stated. The primary objective of the carnival is to ensure Pahalgam remains vibrant and bustling throughout the year, particularly during the winter months, when tourism activity typically slows. The event showcases Kashmiri cuisine and handicrafts to highlight the unique cultural offerings of the region. “The carnival is an excellent platform for visitors to explore Kashmir’s distinctive culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship,” the official added. The recent snowfall has further led to optimism among stakeholders, with officials anticipating a significant increase in tourist footfall. “Currently, 50-70% of hotels with proper heating arrangements are occupied. We are ready with passion and enthusiasm to welcome both returning and first-time tourists,” the official said. Tourism stakeholders in Pahalgam said they are committed to providing an exceptional experience for visitors. “We urge tourists to visit Pahalgam to enjoy its breathtaking natural beauty, warm hospitality and delightful local cuisine,” the official added—(KNO)
